Day in Singapore

Sunday morning we got on the subway in Singapore the MRT and headed off to chruch. All LDS wards are in one building in Singapore a beautiful building. There are 4 floors and each ward meets on a different floor. It was wonderful to be at church and the Singaporian people are delightful.
After church 6 of us split off and decided to go to the Tree Tops tropical rain forest hike. We wanted to eat first so we asked a gentleman on the street where to go eat and he told us that he would take us to a big food court area. In Singapore there are many strict laws and because of this it is an extremely safe country. He saw some of our group crossing the street and he mentioned to us that it was illegal to cross the street. In Singapore they have underground and over head bridges where you can cross, but you cannot just run across the street. I saw no cross walks.  They still practice "canning" or being hit with a cane for certain offenses.  Gum chewing is not allowed. If you are found with drugs then you will be hanged immediately. It is pretty strict. To say the least I followed every law to the T. Well we found the place to eat and it was a huge food court with lots of Asian food. Our new friend, CK, treated all 6 of us to lunch. We got Black Carrot cake with is a dish made out of turnips, eggs, and soy sauce. He then bought us all coconut milk to drink. It was delicious and very different. CK said that he had the afternoon free so he helped us get back on the train and then transfer to a bus. The transportation system in Singapore is very efficient.
The park we went to was amazing. It was a huge rainforest right in the middle of the city and it was about 12 kilometers wide. We walked a 7 kilometer walk and we were all sweating pretty heavily. It was crazy to see how much we were sweating as when we were under the canopy the humidity soared. There were monkeys all over the places and one even barred his teeth at me. I was a little freaked out and went running away pretty fast. One part of the hike was called the Tree Tops where we walked above the forest floor about 100 feet on suspension bridges. The view was amazing. We went slow and just took it all in. By the end we were feeling very tired, sweaty and muddy as it had rained the night before. We were a bedraggled looking crew. Once back to the MRT we headed to Chinatown for dinner. Most people in Singapore speak either Mandarin or Cantonese in their homes, but the official government language is English so they also speak English. This was not the case in China town. Not a lot of people spoke English. China town was much more crowded and crazy than the rest of city. It was fun to see all the different foods and people. I had Boa for dinner which was a vegetable mix wrapped in some kind of dough then steamed. It was delicious. We got back to the ship around 10pm. It was a long day, but I am so happy that we had a day to explore Singapore. It was a pleasant surprise to get this bonus. I really enjoy the other LDSC people. They are an amazing group of people very educated. I have made many friends and am glad to be here.

  2. Be careful of the monkeys. Marsha said when she was in zoo school that they can be very viscious. She was not allowed to wear earrings as they will rip them right out of your ears!
